FURHHDL: Recognition and Rewards

Buddhist Monk The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist monk, scholar and the temporal and
religious leader of the Tibetan people. He is recognized
internationally as a champion of human rights, as an environmentalist, and as an advocate of compassion and personal responsibility.

From 1959 to 1999 His Holiness has received over 57 honorary
doctorates, awards, prizes, etc., in recognition of his message of
peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal
responsibility and compassion. In presenting the Raoul Wallenberg
Congressional Human Rights Award in 1989, U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos said, "His Holiness the Dalai Lama's courageous struggle has distinguished him as a leading proponent of human rights and world peace. His ongoing efforts to end the suffering of the Tibetan people through peaceful negotiations and reconciliation have required enormous courage and sacrifice." His Holiness has also authored more than 50 books.
